Feed ingredient
Bromoform (CHBr3) is a compound produced by the red algae Asparagopsis.
When Asparagopsis is used as a feed additive for ruminants like cattle, it has been found to significantly reduce methane emissions from these animals. This is because bromoform inhibits the activity of methanogenic microbes in the stomachs of ruminants, leading to lower methane production, which can help mitigate the greenhouse gas effects of livestock farming.
Australia’s Asparagopsis forecast demand is estimated to be 75,000mt (wet weight) annually by 2030 to offset methane generated by ruminant livestock. Additionally there is a global opportunity to produce and export Asparagopsis based feed supplements and products to major ruminant livestock producing countries.
