SeaStock and Alquería Partner to Bring AlgaToro™ to Colombia

SeaStock has entered into a strategic partnership with Colombian dairy company Alquería to develop and validate AlgaToro™ in Colombia, marking an important step in SeaStock’s expansion into Latin America.

Under the partnership, Colombia will become the first country in Latin America where AlgaToro™ is evaluated under real-world livestock production conditions. Initial evaluations are expected to take place on Alquería farms, allowing the technology to be assessed within tropical pasture-based dairy systems.

AlgaToro™ is SeaStock’s naturally derived livestock solution developed from Asparagopsis, a red algae species that has been extensively researched for its potential to reduce enteric methane emissions produced during livestock digestion.

Available research around Asparagopsis-based solutions has demonstrated the potential for significant methane reduction, and the Colombia program will help generate further knowledge around how the technology performs within Latin American grazing systems.

Combining Australian marine science with Colombian dairy expertise

The partnership brings together SeaStock’s expertise in cultivating, processing and developing commercial applications from Asparagopsis with Alquería’s more than six decades of experience working with Colombian dairy farmers.

The collaboration is designed to help adapt AlgaToro™ to local production conditions while supporting the development of more productive and lower-emission livestock systems.

For SeaStock, the agreement represents another step towards building an international commercial pathway for AlgaToro™, alongside the company’s growing activity across Australia, Japan and other global markets.

Supporting lower-emission agriculture

Methane generated by cattle is one of the major emissions challenges facing global agriculture. SeaStock is developing naturally derived technologies designed to help livestock producers address that challenge while maintaining commercially viable farming systems.

The Alquería partnership will provide an opportunity to evaluate AlgaToro™ within a market and farming environment very different from Australia, helping build the evidence base required for broader international adoption.

SeaStock’s international growth

The Colombia partnership forms part of SeaStock’s wider strategy to commercialise high-value products derived from sustainably cultivated Asparagopsis.

Alongside agricultural applications such as AlgaToro™, SeaStock is developing naturally derived products for the food and beverage, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries.

DR Rob Kinley

Discovered the Asparagopsis Methane Effect

Dr Rob Kinley is an internationally recognised agricultural scientist specialising in the environmental and nutritional aspects of livestock and food production. With a background spanning analytical chemistry, soil science, environmental science and animal biology, Rob has dedicated much of his career to developing practical solutions that improve livestock productivity while reducing agriculture’s environmental impact.

During his time as a Senior Research Scientist and project leader with CSIRO Agriculture and Food, Rob played a pioneering role in the research that identified the extraordinary methane-reducing potential of Asparagopsis seaweed in cattle and sheep. His work helped drive the development and commercialisation of the technology that ultimately became FutureFeed, where he went on to serve as Chief Scientist.

Rob has more than three decades of experience across agricultural research, environmental science and livestock systems in Australia and internationally. He has authored and contributed to numerous scientific studies relating to Asparagopsis and enteric methane reduction and is widely recognised as one of the leading scientific voices in the development of seaweed-based solutions for lower-emission livestock production.
